Tucked just off Coast Highway within the tony seaside enclave known as Newport Coast, Sage on the Coast is an understated jewel of contemporary refinement, with a dining room swathed in a single shade of soft sage green, a bar area that reflects the setting sun in mirrored shelves and the restaurant’s signature — and transporting — “Patio for all Seasons”, complete with retractable awning, fireplace and herb garden.
Enter the food, created from an ever-changing, seasonal menu that boasts a wide-range of quality, in-demand ingredients picked by hand directly by Chef Mead at the Santa Monica Farmer's market. Mead is fond of saying that his ingredients stand up for themselves, locally sourced as they are from farmers who, after so many years, have become his friends.
Mead is also a stickler about service. Affable and warm-hearted, he eschews attitude of any kind. As such, his staff is friendly, knowledgeable and refreshingly unpretentious. “Guests often tell me that when they are dining at Sage on the Coast that they feel like they are eating at home on their own patio, and I take that as the highest compliment,” said Mead.
Sage on the Coast takes it wines program seriously as well, receiving the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2008. A compendium of largely California’s best, the restaurant’s growing wine cellar draws its strength from diversity, including category headings such as “Interesting Reds” and “Interesting Whites.” And all of it reasonably priced.
Sage on the Coast offers unique flavors for lunch and dinner every day of the week, as well as a tasty spread of brunch items on Sunday. Special wine paired menus and late night bites are available. Sage also offers a full range of catering services for fine special events.
